Paper presentation by Brigitte Herremans at the American Comparative Literature Association’s 2022 Annual Meeting about the potential of literary texts to counter erasure and ‘presence’ experiences of harm in the Syrian context. Literary texts can open up the justice imagination in ways that forensic evidence cannot always do. By circulating multi-faceted truths, they engage the readers’ ability to grapple with complex truths. Furthermore, literary texts can unearth counternarratives to hegemonic understandings of victimization.
